Embodiment Construction

[0022] A system and method for a gesture-based control system is described. In the following description, various features are described in detail in order to provide a more thorough understanding of the present invention. It is apparent that the present invention may be practiced without these specific details. In other instances, well-known features were not described in detail.

[0023] system

[0024] figure 1 A block diagram of an embodiment of the invention is shown. The user places his hands 101 and 102 within the field of view of the array of cameras 104A-104D. The camera detects the position, orientation and movement of the fingers and hands 101 and 102 and generates output signals to the pre-processor 105 . The pre-processor 105 translates the camera's output into a gesture signal, which is provided to the computer processing unit 107 of the system. Computer 107 uses the input information to generate commands to control one or more on-screen cursors and to p...

Abstract

The system provides a gesture interface to elements of each visual presentation presented on one or more display screens. Gesture vocabulary includes: 'instant' commands, where forming one or both hands into an appropriate 'gesture' results in an immediate one-shot action; and 'spatial' commands, where the operator directs the screen through a precise 'pointing' gesture elements above, or perform navigation operations through relative or "offset" gestures. The system has the capability to recognize the user's hands in the form of one or more gloves with specific markings on them, or any suitable means for providing identifiable markings on the user's hands or body parts. The camera system can detect the position, orientation and movement of the user's hand and translate this information into executable commands.

Description

[0001] This patent application claims priority to US Provisional Patent Application 60 / 651,290, filed February 8, 2005, entitled "Gesture Based Control System." [0002] Background of the invention technical field [0003] The present invention relates generally to the field of computer systems, and more particularly to a system and method for a gesture-based control system. Background technique [0004] A user may use an input device such as a mouse, keyboard, joystick, lateral keys, etc., by manipulating data or images in a window on the display, or by selecting an action from a menu or associated program associated with the window. Enter commands and interact with computer systems. Such an input device can also be used as a position translation device, which can be used to position a graphical on-screen pointer, such as a cursor. For example, the cursor function is used to indicate characters to be revised or to indicate where data is to be entered or an operation to b...
