[0017] figure 1 is a block diagram schematically showing a prior art device 10 for supplying power to a gas discharge lamp L. The device 10 comprises a lamp driver 13 which provides the actual lamp current I. Since the drivers are generally known and prior art drivers can be used in implementing the present invention, a detailed description of the design and operation of the lamp driver 13 is omitted here. Lamp driver 13 provides as figure 2 The lamp current shown, which is shown as having a substantially rectangular waveform, has either a base value (lamp on) or substantially zero (lamp off). The current period is denoted as T. The duration of the ON portion of the lamp current is denoted by t ON express. The duty cycle Δ is defined as Δ=t ON / T. The duty cycle Δ may vary between some minimum value Δmin and 1, thereby changing the average lamp current and thus the average light output.

[0018] It should be noted that the minimum value Δmin generally depends on the l...

Abstract

A method is described for driving a lamp (L), specifically but not necessarily a gas discharge lamp. The lamp is driven with a pulse width modulated lamp current. The lamp current frequency is a constant frequency (fref) modulated with a random or at least pseudo not random noise signal (Sn). Further, an apparatus (20) for powering a gas discharge lamp (L) is described.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to the field of lamps. The present invention particularly relates to gas discharge lamps dimmed by pulse width modulation (PWM), such as gas discharge lamps used in backlights of LCD television sets. However, in the case of lamps of different types, the problems underlying the present invention may also arise, and the gist of the present invention can also be applied to such different types of lamps, such as incandescent lamps. Background technique [0002] Gas discharge lamps are generally known, so a detailed discussion of the design of gas discharge lamps is not required here. It will suffice to say the following: A gas discharge lamp consists of two electrodes located in a closed vessel filled with ionized gas or steam. The vessel is typically quartz or ceramic, especially polycrystalline alumina (PCA). The electrodes are arranged at a distance from each other and an arc is maintained between these electro...
