Problems solved by technology

First, it is difficult to obtain reliable VAD results when the audio signal is noisy, which in turn affects the reliability of the noise variance estimation results
Second, this approach prevents the possibility to update the noise variance estimate when a speech signal is present
[0020] However, the minimum statistical method has high memory requirements and thus cannot be applied to devices with limited available memory

Abstract

A speech enhancement method operative for devices having limited available memory is described. The method is appropriate for very noisy environments and is capable of estimating the relative strengths of speech and noise components during both the presence as well as the absence of speech.
