Abstract

A method of expanding a conditional instruction having a plurality of operands within a pipeline processor is disclosed. The method identifies the conditional instruction prior to an issue stage and determines if the plurality of operands exceeds a predetermined threshold. The method expands the conditional instruction into a non-conditional instruction and a select instruction. The method furtherexecutes the non-conditional instruction and the select instruction in separate pipelines.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to computer systems and, more particularly, to a method and system for extending conditional instructions to non-conditional instructions and selection instructions. Background technique [0002] A processor pipeline consists of many stages, where each stage performs a specific function associated with an instruction. Each level is called a pipe level or pipe section. The stages are connected together to form a pipeline. Instructions enter at one end of the pipeline and exit at the other end. Instructions flow sequentially in a stream through the pipeline stages. The stages are arranged such that several stages can process instructions simultaneously. Processing multiple instructions at different pipeline stages simultaneously allows the processor to process instructions faster than processing one instruction at a time, thereby improving the execution speed of the processor. [0003] Within a processor, ther...
