Embodiment Construction

[0020] In the context of the present invention, the encoder is adapted to sequentially and independently process image portions (hereinafter referred to as blocks) having a size of eight rows and eight columns.

[0021] In particular, the encoder is capable of encoding images of a video sequence using discrete cosine transform for reducing spatial redundancy and motion compensated inter prediction for reducing temporal redundancy. These encoding methods are well known. A description of them can be found in a BBC R&D report from S.R.Ely entitled "MPEGVIDEO CODING: A basic tutorial introduction".

[0022] According to the invention, the encoder is adapted to select blocks in the image and to introduce information identifying these blocks in the bitstream to be sent to the decoder. These blocks are parts of an image having a size of eight rows and eight columns. They represent the typical texture of an image. Hereinafter, they are referred to as texture pattern blocks.

Abstract

The invention concerns a method for processing images, texture pattern blocks representative of a typical texture of the images being stored in a memory, the method comprising the following steps: - transforming the pixel grey levels of a current block into a current block of frequency coefficients using a predefined transform; - building up (76) a merger block, each frequency coefficient positioned at a defined place of the merger block being equal either to the frequency coefficient positioned at the same place of the current block, or to the frequency coefficient positioned at the same place of a texture pattern block among the texture pattern blocks stored in the memory; - selecting (94) a merger block according to a predefined function (J); and - replacing (96) in the image the current block by the selected merger block. The invention also concerns an electronic device for processing the corresponding images.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention belongs to the field of video coding and compression. In particular, the invention relates to methods and devices for processing images. Background technique [0002] In an encoding method similar to the method defined by the JPEG, MPEG1, MPEG2, or H.264 standards, each image is first divided into parts called blocks or macroblocks according to the size of the image, and then sequentially to process. During the decoding process, these blocks are reconstructed one by one independently in succession and assembled together to recover each image. [0003] Due to the separate processing of blocks in the encoding process, block artifacts can be perceived in the reconstructed image. These artifacts are visually annoying. [0004] In the literature, different image processing techniques (such as Markov random fields, adaptive filtering, projection to convex sets) are used to solve this problem. All of these methods achieve fairly good result...
