Problems solved by technology

However, since the collar can be seen to be able to bend backwards from the head, it is possible for the animal to grab the injury in the head area, thus also limiting the overall usefulness of this type of collar
And the soft e-collar can also be easily chewed by pets due to the loose inner material

Embodiment Construction

[0034] first reference figure 1 , 2 and 3, the present invention provides a protective collar 1 which is used as a veterinary restraint when mounted on an animal. In this embodiment of the invention, the protective collar 1 comprises a first outer sheet 10 comprising a flexible material having inner and outer arcuate edges 12 and 14 respectively, the two edges being substantially concentric about a common center. and extending between the first end 16 and the second end 18. The second outer sheet 20 ( figure 1 The back sheet 10) in also comprises a flexible material. The second outer sheet 20 is of substantially the same size and shape, capable of forming both sides of the collar with space for the elastic backing layer 22, as figure 2 shown in .

[0035] like figure 2 As shown in , the elastic backing layer 22 is also of substantially similar shape to the first and second outer sheets 10 and 20 and is dimensioned to be located between the first and second outer sheets 1...

Abstract

A custom fittable collar for an animal, useful to prevent the animal from contacting injured areas on the body, thus promoting healing of wounds. The collar comprises opposing sheets of flexible material with a resilient material held between them. The resulting collar is rigid enough to resist deformation thus preventing licking or biting of a wound by the animal, but soft enough that the collaris both comfortable to wear, and less likely to catch on other objects, thus improving the safety and wearability of the collar. The collar further comprises a closure assembly adapted for easy placement or removal of the collar. The collar further comprises stitching that creates fold lines to allow the collar to be conveniently folded.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to protective collars for small animals, also known as veterinary restraints, and commonly referred to as "Elizabethan collars" or "e-collars". This collar is used to prevent animals from licking or biting wounds, or from damaging surgical sutures. The collar further prevents the destruction of topically applied medication at the injury or surgical wound site. Background technique [0002] When an injury or diseased area is present, many animals, such as cats and dogs, instinctively lick or bite the injured or diseased area. Repeated licking typically results in slower healing and an increased risk of infection. Licking further increases the risk of destruction of sutures placed to keep the surgical wound closed while the animal has undergone a surgical procedure, while prolonging the healing process. Disruption of surgical wounds is highly undesirable as it puts the animal at risk of serious or even fatal in vivo infec...
