Embodiment Construction

[0027] With reference to the accompanying drawings, and in particular to figure 1 , 1 A and 2, show a typical rotating bucket centrifuge rotor assembly 10 according to one embodiment of the present invention. The rotor assembly 10 is substantially cylindrical and supports a plurality of rotating buckets 12 each configured to hold sample tubes or similar laboratory-type containers 13 for centrifugal rotation about a central axis of rotation 14 .

[0028] Rotor assembly 10 includes a rotor body 16 that supports bucket 12 , and includes a central hub 18 that includes shaft 14 . Central shaft hub 18 may be engaged by a centrifuge spindle (not shown) for rotating rotor assembly 10 . More particularly, the central shaft hub 18 is configured for engagement with the spindle via a connector 22 that may be coupled to or integral with the rotor body 16 as will be described in greater detail below. The rotor body 16 may be formed by, for example, compression molding, and may include ca...

Abstract

A swing bucket 12 is provided for use with a centrifuge rotor (10). The bucket 12 includes a bucket body 70 that has a side wall 72 and a bottom wall 74. A pair of projections 80 extend from the side wall 72 on opposing sides of the bucket body 70 and are configured for engagement with the centrifuge rotor (10). The bucket 12 also includes reinforcing material 102 coupled to the projections 80 and extend across the bottom wall 74 for restricting movement of the bucket body 70 relative to the projections (80) during centrifugation on the centrifuge rotor (10). The projections 80 may include bushings that extend outwardly from the side wall 72 for engaging corresponding pins 92 on the centrifuge rotor (10). The projections 80 may alternatively or additionally include pins for engaging corresponding journals on the centrifuge rotor (10). The bucket body 70 may include a pair of diametrically opposed apertures 90, with each of the projections 80 extending through one of the apertures 90.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application is generally related to co-pending U.S. Patent Application Serial No. _________ (Attorney Docket No. TFFBLT-03), entitled "Centrifuge Rotor," filed on the same date as this application, [0003] Said documents are incorporated herein by reference in their entirety. technical field [0004] The present invention relates generally to centrifuge rotors, and more particularly to a rotating bucket for a high speed centrifuge rotor. Background technique [0005] Centrifuges are used to separate components of collected samples of biological and other materials. The samples are typically placed in test tubes or other containers configured to be received in a centrifuge rotor for rapid spinning in the centrifuge. A centrifuge rotor includes a rotating bucket pivotally coupled to a rotor body to allow the longitudinal axis of a sample tube or container carried on the bucket to rotate from a substantially verti...
