Embodiment Construction

[0022] as in figure 1 As shown in , a section is disclosed through a stud 1 which is embedded in a hole 2 in the anode 3 . The hole is wider than the corresponding dimension of the stud and the annular space between the stud and the hole is filled with an electrically conductive solid or particle 4, which in this embodiment is a steel ball. Spikes 5 or the like penetrate the studs through holes 6 and further into holes 7 in the anode 3 to mechanically secure the parts to each other. Additionally, spikes can be replaced by threaded bolts for better grip on studs and holes. The bolt may conveniently have a bolt head for easier assembly / disassembly (not shown).

[0023] as in figure 2 As shown in , a sectional view through a stud 1' is disclosed which is inserted into a hole 2' in an anode 3' with a second fixing means. The hole has a downwardly diverging conical section 8'. The space between the stud and the hole is filled with conductive particles 4', which in this embodi...

Abstract

An electrode for use in an electrolysis process for production of aluminium, the electrode (3, 20) comprises a body of calcinated carbonaceous material connected with an electrical current lead (1, 21). The current lead is embedded in a recess in said carbonaceous body. The recess is wider than the lead and being filled with an electric conductive material. The electric conductive material comprises conductive particles (4, 4'). The method relates to the production of such an electrode and recovery of the conductive material after the electrode has been worn out.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to an electrode and a manufacturing method thereof. In particular the invention relates to prebaked electrodes for the electrolytic production of aluminum and it can be applied both to the anode (positive electrode) and to the cathode (negative electrode). Background technique [0002] Typically, the prebaked anodes are secured to studs that form part of the anode hanger. The anode has pre-formed holes for entry of the studs. The fixation between the studs and the anode is achieved by pouring molten cast iron in the annular space between each individual stud and the corresponding hole in the anode. [0003] Similarly, for the fixation of the collector strips in the cathode block, there are pre-formed slots in the block to allow the entry of the strips. The space between the slit wall and the strip is filled with molten cast iron. [0004] The use of molten cast iron involves, for example, an investment in a furnace cap...
