Embodiment Construction

[0017] In the following description, a tray for gas-liquid contact such as used in distillation is described. The downcomer of the pan includes the distributor. The downcomer distributor has a series of discharge ports and flow directing flanges which in combination provide relatively uniform flow through the pan directly below the downcomer. This reduces the maldistribution present in other designs, and in turn improves the effectiveness of the gas-liquid contact on the disc.

[0018] The disc assembly, generally indicated by the reference numeral 10, will now be referred to figure 1 Go to Figure 7 for description.

[0019] refer to figure 1 , the disc assembly 10 for gas / liquid contact is mounted in a chemical processing tower, shown partially cut away and indicated by reference numeral 12, and having a wall 14 with an inner surface 16, the disc assembly 10 being fixable In the chemical treatment tower 12. The tray 10 has a tray deck 20 and at least one first downcomer ...

Abstract

A tray assembly is provided for improved gas / liquid contact when used in a large chemical process tower. Each tray has a downcomer wall of which the lower portion is a distributor. The distributor has discharged ports sized to control the rate of liquid flow at different positions across the distribution and flanges aligned individually to driect liquid flow from different discharge ports across different areas of the tray deck immediately below the downcomer. In combination, discharge ports and liquid flow directing flanges effect even liquid flow across the surface of the tary immediately below. Benefits of this invention are trays with better mass transfer efficiency and enhanced capacity compared with prior art trays.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates to distillation trays for use in chemical processing columns. Background technique [0002] Several tray designs are known for gas liquid contactors used in processes including reaction and separation. In various designs, trays are located within the column to make contact between the components of the mixture within the column. For example, described by Philip C. Wankat in "Equilibrium Staged Separations" (1998) published by Elsevier, by C. Judson King in "Separation Processes" published by McGraw-Hill Book Company )" (Second Edition, 1980), described by Henry Z. Kist in "Distillation Design" (1992), published by McGraw-Hill Book Company, and described by Johann G. Stichlmair and James R Several disc designs are known, as described by Fair in "Distillation: Principles and Practice" (1998), published by Wiley-VCH. By Wijn, E.F in "The effect of downcomer layout pattern on tray efficiency" published in Chemical Engineering (Che...
