Abstract

The transmitting entity uses different steering vectors for different subbands to achieve steering diversity. Each steering vector defines or forms a beam for the associated subband. Any steering vector can be used for steering diversity. Steering vectors can be defined such that the beam changes in a continuous rather than abrupt manner across the subbands. This is achieved by applying a continuously varying phase shift across multiple subbands per transmit antenna. As an example, the phase shift may vary in a linear fashion over multiple subbands for each transmit antenna, and each antenna may be associated with a different phase slope. Applying a linearly varying phase shift to the modulation symbols in the frequency domain can be achieved by delaying or cyclically shifting the corresponding time domain samples.
