The method comprises the following steps: receiving a video data retrieval request which carries the target picture characteristic identification information of the video data required to be retrieved; inquiring the first-level index of the video data required to be retrieved; judging whether the first-level index is provided with the target picture characteristic identification information; if yes, inquiring all corresponding second-level indexes according to the first-level index, and finding the second-level index provided with the target picture characteristic identification information among all the corresponding second-level indexes; according to the second-level index, determining the storage address of a corresponding GOP (Group Of Picture); and according to the determined storage address of the GOP, returning the video data retrieval result.
