Abstract

Embodiments of the present invention provide a method and an apparatus for encoding and decoding a multi-channel signal by discarding duplicate information among multiple channels and encoding and decoding the residual signal, without using a downmix signal. The present invention encodes and decodes: a reference signal from multiple channel signals constituting a multi-channel signal; a phase difference between each of the multiple channel signals and the reference signal; a gain which is a ratio of each of the multiple channel signals to the reference signal; and a residual signal which is an error between an actual channel signal and a channel signal predicted by applying the phase difference and the gain to the reference signal.
