Abstract

An on-board system and method for real time measurement of relative velocity and distance of separation between a subject vehicle and objects in its surroundings is disclosed. The present invention provides a system comprising a plurality of sensors that serve to detect, determine positions, measure the distances and relative velocities of objects around a subject vehicle and issue warnings to the driver about impending collisions and the path to be taken during different maneuvers.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to safety systems for use in automotive transport components. In particular, the present invention relates to automotive systems and devices for assisting the driver of a motorized land vehicle in various driving situations and maneuvers. The system of the present invention utilizes several sensors that work in concert to determine the relative position of objects around the car and warn the driver of an imminent collision. Background technique [0002] Collision avoidance systems and adaptive cruise control systems can be found in some technical literature. Various types of collision warning systems for road-going automobiles have been proposed to alert drivers of potential collisions. [0003] US Patent 5529138 describes a collision warning and avoidance system, which uses lidar to measure the distance and relative speed of the car to the object to accurately calculate the collision time. US Patent 5646612 d...
