Embodiment Construction

[0022] specific reference figure 1 , shows a schematic block diagram of a data processing system (or system for short) 100, in which the solution according to an embodiment of the present invention can be applied. The system 100 has a distributed architecture based on a network 105—eg, a local area network (LAN). A plurality of computers are connected to each other through a network 105 . In particular, server computer 110 controls the deployment of software images to client computers 115—only two are shown in the figure for simplicity; program, and / or data).

[0023] A general-purpose (server or client) computer of the system 100 is formed by several units, which are connected in parallel to the system bus 120 (which has a structure appropriately expanded according to the actual functions of the computers in the system 100). Specifically, one or more microprocessors (μP) 125 control the operation of the computer; RAM 130 is used by the microprocessor 125 as a working memor...

Abstract

A method, system and computer program product for managing multiple software images in a data processing entity. At least part of the memory blocks of each of the software images is stored into a corresponding image portion of a mass memory. A current software image stored in a current image is selected. The memory blocks stored in boot locations of the current software image are relocated to a relocation portion of the mass memory. The boot blocks of the current software image are copied into the corresponding boot location. The data processing entity is booted from the boot blocks of the current software image in the corresponding boot locations and each request to access a selected memory block of the current software image by the access function is served.

Description

technical field [0001] The solution according to one or more embodiments of the present invention relates to the field of data processing. More specifically, the solution relates to the management of software images. Background technique [0002] In general, a software image is a structure that includes software modules that reside on a computer (eg, its operating system, applications, and / or data). [0003] In some cases, it may be desirable to have multiple operating systems available on the same computer. For example, this might be useful for running programs that require a different operating system, or for testing a new operating system or a new version of it. [0004] For this purpose, multi-boot technology can be utilized. The multi-boot technology allows multiple operating systems to be installed on a computer, and when the computer is started, it is possible to choose which operating system to start. The desired result is achieved by dividing the hard disk of th...
