Abstract

Techniques for selectively transmitting power decision pilots are described. The power decision pilot may indicate the transmit power used for data transmission in future time intervals. When it is beneficial enough for channel quality estimation, the power decision pilot is sent, otherwise, the power decision pilot is omitted. Whether to send a power decision pilot may be determined based on system type (eg, heterogeneous or homogeneous system), presence or absence of a dominant interferer, whether a request to reduce interference is received, or the like. For example, if a base station generates high interference to unserved terminals, if a served terminal observes high interference from neighboring base stations, if the base station receives a request to reduce interference from an unserved terminal, etc., the base station may send a power decision guide frequency. If the transmission power determination pilot is determined, the power determination pilot is transmitted, otherwise, the power determination pilot is omitted.
