Embodiment Construction

[0086] refer to figure 1 , shows the apparatus 100 for generating three-dimensional image information according to the first embodiment of the present invention. The device 100 includes a lens 102 having a single imaging path generally oriented along a central axis 103 . The lens 102 is operable to direct light captured within the field of view of the lens to an aperture plane 104 of the lens.

[0087] The apparatus 100 also includes a spatial discriminator 108 located near the aperture plane 104 . Aperture plane 104 may be the physical aperture plane of lens 102 or may be a conjugate plane of the physical aperture plane. The discriminator 108 includes a first portion 110 configured to transmit light having a first optical state through a first portion of the single imaging path, and a second portion 112 configured to transmit light having a first optical state through a second portion of the single imaging path. Two optical states of light. A first portion 110 and a secon...

Abstract

A method and device for generating three-dimensional image information are disclosed. The method includes directing captured light within the field of view of the lens to an aperture plane of the lens, receiving the captured light at a spatial discriminator located adjacent the aperture plane, the discriminator comprising a first portion arranged to pass through a single imaging path A first portion of light having a first optical state is transmitted, and a second portion of light having a second optical state is arranged to be transmitted through a second portion of the single imaging path. The first and second portions of the single imaging path provide a first perspective viewpoint and a second perspective viewpoint, respectively, within a field of view of the lens to form a first image and a second image, respectively, at an image sensor disposed at an image plane of the lens . The first image represents the object in the field of view from the first viewpoint, the second image represents the object from the second viewpoint, and the first image and the second image are operable together to characterize the three-dimensional spatial properties of the object. The method also includes receiving a first image at a first set of sensor elements on the image sensor, the first set of sensor elements responding to light having a first optical state, and receiving a second image at a second set of sensor elements on the image sensor. For the second image, the second set of sensor elements responds to light having a second optical state.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to generating three-dimensional image information, and more particularly to generating three-dimensional image information using a single imaging path. Background technique [0002] In traditional two-dimensional (2D) imaging, the rays representing objects in a three-dimensional (3D) scene are captured and mapped to a 2D image plane, thus depth information is not recorded. Stereo optical systems are able to generate images representing depth information by generating independent images from different perspective viewpoints. For example this depth information can be used to generate 3D dimensions between points in the scene. Optionally, the independent images can be presented to the user's left and right eyes independently, so as to imitate the behavior of human eyes when observing a real scene, and allow the user to perceive depth in the current observation. Independent or stereoscopic images are generally gene...
