[0025] Contraceptive devices that provide substantially immediate and permanent birth control are described herein. Also described herein are systems and methods for transcervical delivery of contraceptive devices. Contraceptive devices may include expandable implants. The implant includes a hydrogel to provide substantially immediate birth control and a tissue ingrowth promoter or fibers to provide permanent birth control. Once the device with the hydrogel is deployed, the hydrogel provides immediate birth control by swelling in the physiological environment and tissue ingrowth promoters such as polyester fibers promote tissue ingrowth to permanently occlude The fallopian tube in which the device is implanted. As an alternative to or in combination with a hydrogel, the implant may contain copper or copper ions to provide substantially immediate birth control.
