Embodiment Construction

[0058] Exemplary embodiments of the present invention will now be described with reference to ultrafiltration systems designed for ambulatory SCUF or other types of continuous or intermittent ultrafiltration worn or otherwise carried by individuals undergoing treatment .

[0059] Throughout the description, the same reference numerals have been used to designate corresponding elements.

[0060] figure 1 A system 1 for ultrafiltration according to a first embodiment is illustrated. The system defines a blood path extending from an access device 2 for connection to the vascular system of a human or animal subject S to a buffer container 3 . The access device 2 may be of any suitable kind, such as a cannula, needle, catheter, etc., and may be used to connect to any suitable vascular access, such as a cannula, implant, Scribner type, anywhere on the subject's body. Vascular cannulation (Scribnershunt), peripheral IV catheter, etc. The access device 2 is connected to the inlet ...

Abstract

An ultrafiltration device is designed for use in an ambulatory SCUF or other type of continuous or intermittent ultrafiltration, typically while worn or otherwise carried by the subject(s) being treated. The ambulatory ultrafiltration device comprises a blood filter (4) having a blood side (6) for fluid communication with the vasculature of a subject (S), an ultrafiltrate side (7) and a 6) Semi-permeable membrane (8) between the ultrafiltrate side (7). The ambulatory ultrafiltration device also includes a buffer container (3) in fluid communication with the blood side (6) of the blood filter (4) and a blood pump (9). The blood pump ( 9 ) is controlled to alternate between a withdrawal phase and a return phase. In the extraction phase, blood is extracted on the blood path from the subject (S) to the buffer container (3) via the blood filter (4). In the return phase, the blood is returned from the buffer container (3) to the subject (S) on the blood path. The blood filter (4) is configured to remove ultrafiltrate from blood during at least one of an aspiration phase and a return phase. The use of a single blood path for withdrawal of blood and return of treated blood makes the device suitable for ambulatory ultrafiltration.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the removal of excess fluid, such as blood, from a human or animal subject. Specifically, the present invention relates to a technique for providing an ambulatory ultrafiltration device connected to the vascular system of a subject. Background technique [0002] Ultrafiltration (UF) includes a number of membrane filtration techniques in which hydrostatic pressure forces a liquid against a semipermeable membrane. [0003] In blood processing, UF usually refers to the process of removing water from plasma. Blood is passed through the blood side of the blood filter and a pressure gradient is created across the semipermeable membrane. A pressure gradient forces fluid through the pores of the membrane. The fine pores filter electrolytes and small and medium-sized molecules (20,000 to 30,000 Daltons) from the blood plasma. In contrast to plasma, the ultrafiltrate exiting the filter pores is free of plasma proteins and cel...
