Embodiment Construction

[0014] In the following description, numerous specific details are set forth. It is understood, however, that these specific details may not be needed to practice the embodiments of the invention. In other instances, well-known circuits, structures and techniques have not been shown in detail in order not to obscure the understanding of this description.

[0015] References in the specification to "one embodiment," "an embodiment," "example embodiment," etc. mean that the embodiments may include a particular feature, structure, or characteristic but that each embodiment may not necessarily include the particular feature, structure, or characteristic. characteristic. Additionally, such terms are not necessarily referring to the same embodiment. Furthermore, when a particular feature, structure or characteristic is described in conjunction with one embodiment, it is considered within the knowledge of those skilled in the art to implement such feature, structure or characterist...

Abstract

An edge router runs a Multipath Transmission Control Protocol (MPTCP) proxy to allow for a host that implements TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) to operate normally yet reap the benefits of an MPTCP connection. An upgrade of a TCPIP stack on the host is not necessary. The edge router demultiplexes packets received from the host over a TCP connection to an MPTCP connection and multiplexes packets sent to the host over an MPTCP connection to a TCP connection. As a result, higher throughput of packet communication can be realized, for example, for improved video support.

Description

technical field [0001] Embodiments of the invention relate to the field of Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) services, and more particularly, to improving the throughput of data communicated to and from a host or client running TCP. Background technique [0002] A host is, for example, a server, laptop or mobile phone, which communicates with another host or a subscriber end station, such as another server, laptop or mobile phone. A host running TCP utilizes a TCP connection to send and receive packets related to another host or a subscriber end station. Edge routers assist hosts by passing packets to and from the hosts over TCP connections. Edge routers do not terminate or initiate TCP connections, but react to ensure packets are delivered correctly. [0003] Multipath Transmission Control Protocol (MPTCP) is a potential implementation that would have various benefits over TCP. MPTCP utilizes multiple paths for one TCP connection and thus allows higher throughput in da...
