The hybrid electric vehicle includes an engine 12 having a rotational output of a disconnect clutch 14 connected to a drive motor 16 . The output of the electric motor is connected to the input of the torque converter 18 , and the output of the torque converter is connected to the input shaft of the automatic transmission 20 . In a conventional manner, the automatic transmission is connected by a differential 24 to the drive wheels 22, 22'. In the schematic illustration, the hybrid electric vehicle 10 has a pair of non-driven wheels, however, alternatively, a transfer case and a second differential could be utilized to actually drive all of the vehicle's wheels. The engine, disconnect clutch, electric motor, torque converter and automatic transmission are sequentially connected in series, as in figure 1 shown in.
