[0041] Preparation of emulsion copolymer

[0042] The VAE and acrylic copolymers comprising the essential and optional comonomers described above can be prepared using conventional emulsion polymerization methods leading to the preparation of copolymer emulsions. These emulsions can then be added to the coating compositions herein in aqueous latex form. Such methods are described, for example, in US Patent No. 5,849,389, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety.

[0043] In a typical polymerization process, vinyl esters, ethylene, acrylates and other comonomers may be prepared in an aqueous medium in a suitable polymerization vessel at a pressure not exceeding 100 atmospheres in the presence of catalyst components and at least one emulsifier down aggregation. The aqueous reaction mixture in the polymerization vessel can be maintained at a pH of about 2-6 with suitable buffers.

Abstract

An aqueous latex-based coating composition is disclosed that includes a blend of an ethylene-vinyl acetate emulsion copolymer component and an acrylic emulsion copolymer component of a selected type. Acrylic copolymers mainly comprise acrylate comonomers or acrylate comonomers and vinylaromatic (eg styrene) comonomers. The blend of these two emulsion copolymer types also contains a specific type of hydrazine-based water-soluble crosslinker that can ultimately react with the acrylic emulsion copolymer components. Acrylic emulsion copolymers are materials that contain small amounts of 1) carboxyl functional comonomers, such as itaconic acid and / or (meth)acrylic acid, and 2) aldehyde or ketone containing comonomers, such as diacetone propylene amides. Such latex-based coating compositions may be formulated in the form of water-based paint compositions. These coating products provide paint coatings exhibiting desirable wet and dry adhesion characteristics and desirable blocking resistance.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to vinyl acetate-ethylene (VAE)-based aqueous latex coating compositions that can be added to latex paint products. Background technique [0002] Due to the many advantages that latex paints have over solvent-based products, this type of paint has captured a large portion of the interior and exterior paint market. The main advantages of latex paints include easy cleaning, low odor and quick drying. [0003] Two main types of emulsion polymers are used to formulate latex paints, namely, (1) acrylic emulsion copolymers comprising alkyl esters of acrylic and methacrylic acid or such esters with vinyl aromatic comonomers such as benzene Combinations of vinyl are also small amounts of acrylic and methacrylic acid, and (2) vinyl acetate copolymers, which include combinations of vinyl acetate with ethylene, vinyl chloride, and / or small amounts of softer acrylic monomers. Acrylic emulsion polymers are mainly used in high quality...
