Embodiment Construction

[0023] figure 1 An example of a system 100 that may be used to map an individual's cognitive function is shown. System 100 is controlled by terminal 102 . Terminal 102 is shown directly connected to and directly controlling operator display 104 , transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) 108 , tracking system 112 , subject display 114 , and subject camera 116 . Terminal 102 also controls some other functions and components such as TMS coil device 110 .

[0024] Navigating with Navigator Brain Stimulation (NBS)

[0025] Navigated brain stimulation (NBS) is the stimulation of specific locations or regions of an individual's brain. The stimulation can be generated in a number of ways, a preferred non-invasive method is by means of generating a magnetic field which introduces the stimulation into a specific location in the subject's brain. In order to map functional parts of a subject's brain, the specific location of any stimulus should be known precisely. To this end, the NBS...

Abstract

The present invention relates to the field of mapping cognitive brain functions, more specifically to non-invasive systems for and methods of cognitive mapping. Examples of cognitive brain function which can reliably be mapped according to embodiments of the present invention are speech, language, working-memory and decision-making. According to certain embodiments, navigated Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is utilized along with accurate baseline determination in order to provide accurate, non-invasive cognitive mapping.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the field of mapping cognitive brain functions. According to the embodiment of the present invention, the cognitive brain functions that can be reliably mapped are speech function, language expression function, working memory function, and decision-making function. Background technique [0002] Although the anatomy of the brains of most individuals is similar, the functional set-up of the brains of different individuals is as unique as a fingerprint. This leads to a common problem in neuroscience, where based on an understanding of brain anatomy, clinicians and physicians can easily identify aberrations and trauma such as blood clots, tumors and strokes. However, they currently have no way to visualize the function of the brain material in and around these aberrations and trauma. [0003] Neurosurgeons can easily use existing technologies such as MRI to determine the location of tumors in a patient's brain. Depending...
