A printer comprises a printing unit; a ROM storing compressed font data for each character, and storing a compressed data index establishing correspondence between character codes and addresses where the compressed font data of characters corresponding to each character code are stored in the ROM; a compressed data obtaining unit which obtains the addresses where the compressed font data corresponding to the character codes of characters of a printing object are stored, and reads the compressed font data according to the obtained addresses; a decompression unit for decompressing the compressed font data in a font decompression area; and a printing control unit for controlling the printing unit to print the characters of the printing object based on the depressed data.
