Embodiment Construction

[0009] According to one aspect of the present disclosure, there is provided a pressure sensitive multi-touch device utilizing resistive detection to detect the force of a touch input on a surface of the multi-touch device. In particular, a multi-touch device comprises a matrix of pressure-sensitive cells serving as touch sensors. A force spreading layer positioned between a touch input and a cell allows the force of a touch input at a particular contact area to spread proportionally across adjacent cells. The location of the touch area can then be interpolated from the respective resistances measured at these cells. In this way, the location of a touch contact can be determined with relatively high resolution, even with a relatively coarser matrix of sensors.

[0010] Aspects of the invention will now be described, by way of example and with reference to the illustrated embodiments. Components and other elements that may be substantially the same in one or more embodiments a...

Abstract

A pressure-sensitive multi-touch device is provided. The multi-touch device includes a matrix of pressure sensitive cells, each pressure sensitive cell configured to change the resistance of the cell inversely proportional to the amount of force applied to the cell. The multi-touch device further includes a force spreading layer configured to spread the force of a touch input at the contact area to two or more pressure sensitive cells within the matrix of pressure sensitive cells.

Description

Background technique [0001] A multi-touch device may detect a touch input using various types of touch detection techniques, such as detecting capacitance, detecting resistance, detecting touch optically, and the like. Touch input is detected and reported based on changes in capacitive, resistive, or optical parameters of the device when it is directed at the surface of the device. However, increasing resolution in such systems in a cost-effective manner without sacrificing responsiveness can be challenging. Contents of the invention [0002] This Summary is provided to introduce a selection of concepts in a simplified form that are further described below in the Detailed Description. This Summary is not intended to identify key features or essential features of the claimed subject matter, nor is it intended to be used to limit the scope of the claimed subject matter. Furthermore, the claimed subject matter is not limited to implementations that solve any or all disadvanta...
