Disclosed are a device for detecting a proximity obstacle on a vehicle and a method thereof. The device and the method measure a vibration aftershock time generating when an ultrasonic wave signal on an ultrasonic wave sensor for detecting the obstacle is transmitted; store in a memory if the measured aftershock time is within the aftershock occurrence possible time; detect whether the obstacle is there from the saved aftershock end point; and prevent the error that is recognized as the obstacle far in spite of the obstacle which is actually close to the device by improving the function of detecting the obstacle nearby the device in order to prevent in advance the risk of car accidents as a result.
