Abstract

The present invention relates to methods and systems for fault protection. The system and method may be implemented in a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) to limit the magnitude of current flowing upon an AC-to-chassis fault (ACF) between an AC connection and a chassis of the HEV. An electric machine having windings, an inverter submodule (ISM) having first and second switches, and a fault protection element (FPE) coupled to the ISM are provided. This winding is coupled to an ISM coupled via an AC connection. The FPE may include, for example, first and second inductors. To limit the magnitude of the current, the current may be passed along a first current path including the second inductance when the first switch is closed, and may be passed along a second current path including the first inductance when the second switch is closed.
