Embodiment Construction

[0218] A number of preferred embodiments of the invention will now be described. These embodiments will be described primarily with reference to the use of the invention in a graphics processing system. However, as noted above, the present invention is applicable to other pipelined data processing systems that include early "data entity" culling testing.

[0219] figure 1 A graphics processor 1 operable according to the invention is schematically shown.

[0220] figure 1 The main elements and pipeline stages of the graphics processor 1 pertaining to the operation of the present embodiment are shown. Those skilled in the art will understand that there may be figure 1 Other elements of the graphics processor shown in . It should be noted here that figure 1 are schematic only, and even though the functional units and pipeline stages shown in the figure 1 are schematically shown as separate stages, eg in practice they may also share significant hardware circuitry. It shoul...

Abstract

Hidden Surface Removal in Graphics Processing Systems. The early depth test stage (4, 13) of the graphics processing pipeline (1) is configured to: broadcast (9, 10, 11, 14 ) to other stages in the pipeline (3, 4, 6, 12). Other stages in the pipeline then use the early depth test pass information to determine whether processing of any fragments they are currently processing can be slowed down. A signal that triggers to stop processing of a segment whose processing has been previously slowed down is sent if the segment that triggers slowing down the processing of a segment already in the pipeline passes all conditional drop tests that the segment is subject to. If a segment fails the conditional drop test it is subject to, a signal is sent that triggers resumption of processing of the segment whose processing has previously been slowed down.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates to computer graphics processing, and in particular, to hidden surface removal in graphics processing. Background technique [0002] As is known in the art, graphics processing is typically performed by first dividing the graphics processing (rendering) output (such as a frame to be displayed) into a number of similar basic components (called "primitives") to enable Perform graphics manipulation operations more easily. These "primitives" usually take the form of simple polygons such as triangles. [0003] Primitives for output, such as frames to be displayed, are typically generated by an application programming interface for a graphics processing system using graphics drawing instructions (requests) received from an application requiring graphics processing (eg, a game). [0004] Individual primitives are typically defined at this stage by and represented by a set of vertices. Each vertex of a primitive is associated with a se...
