Embodiment Construction

[0015] The present invention relates to methods and apparatus for task execution utilizing idle resources in a grid computing system. Idle resources may be understood as computing devices that are in an idle state, with processing capabilities not being utilized and available for performing tasks.

[0016] A grid computing system typically includes one or more grid servers, called dedicated resources, assigned primary tasks for execution. The main tasks can include data analysis tasks, simulation, modeling tasks and testing tasks, etc. A grid server can communicate with idle computing devices, called non-dedicated resources, and assign subtasks associated with a master task to these idle computing devices. These idle computing devices execute the assigned subtasks and send the subtask results back to the grid server. The grid server extracts subtask results from idle computing devices and aggregates the subtask results to generate a master task result.

Abstract

The invention relates to a task execution method, a border device and a grid server in a grid computing system. Methods and apparatus for performing tasks in a grid computing system are disclosed herein. Depending on the implementation, the boundary device (104) is utilized to identify free time slots and estimate the duration of these free time slots to perform subtasks. These idle time slots represent the idle state of the border device. At least one computational performance parameter of the boundary device for performing subtasks during idle time slots is determined with the boundary device. An advertisement profile is created with the edge device, wherein the advertisement profile has at least one free time slot, a duration of the at least one free time slot and at least one computational performance parameter associated with the at least one free time slot. A border device is utilized to provide an advertisement configuration file to a grid server (102) in a grid computing system to divide a main task to create subtasks that the border device can execute.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to grid computing systems, and in particular, but not exclusively, to task execution utilizing idle resources in grid computing systems. Background technique [0002] In today's environment, computing devices, such as computers and servers, are commonly utilized to perform various tasks. Tasks such as data analysis, simulation, modeling and testing can be computationally intensive and complex and may not be performed by a single computing device. These computationally intensive tasks are distributed to multiple computing devices used as computing resources for execution. [0003] Grid computing is one such common technology for performing tasks that include computationally intensive tasks. In grid computing, a computing device assigned a master task for execution controls the processing power of idle computing resources to utilize these idle computing resources to execute subtasks of the master task.
