Abstract

The invention discloses a refrigerant cooling system for cooling a superconducting magnet, comprising: a refrigerant container (15), which is connected to a cooling circuit structure (13) in thermal contact with the superconducting magnet; a condensation chamber (16), the recondensation chamber being arranged such that the lower end of the refrigerant container is above the lower end of the recondensation chamber (16); a recondensation refrigeration device (20), the recondensation refrigeration Apparatus arranged to recondense refrigerant gas within said recondensation chamber (16); and a heater (24) positioned to heat gaseous refrigerant within said recondensation chamber (16). The recondensing chamber (16) is hydraulically connected to said refrigerant container (15) through a refrigerant supply pipe (18). However, more recent designs have reduced the amount of liquid refrigerant required, typically through the use of cooling loop configurations. Such systems typically have a relatively small refrigerant vessel positioned at the top of the cooling circuit below a recondensing refrigerator to provide liquid refrigerant that is gravity-fed supplied in thermal contact with the magnet. The hot or boiling refrigerant is returned through the cooling circuit to the refrigerant container for recooling. However, such structures tend to have a greater height than is available in a typical installation room.
