Abstract

Internal components of gas and steam turbines are inspected using an optical camera inspection system that automatically and / or manually positions the camera field of view (FOV) to areas of interest within the turbine along a pre-specified navigation path and Capture images with or without human interference. Camera positioning and image capture can begin automatically or upon receipt of operator permission. The inspection system consisted of an articulated multi-axis inspection instrument with an optical camera inserted through the burner nozzle access port, burner and transition such that the camera FOV captured the leading edge of row 1 rotating turbine blades as the rotor rotated at up to 1000 RPM. Illumination system strobe lights and camera image capture are synchronized with blade rotational speed, allowing images of multiple or all blades to be acquired from a single detection insertion port.
