Embodiment Construction

[0046]The present technology will be described with reference to a four-stroke, in-line, two-cylinder internal combustion engine. However, it is contemplated that aspects of the present technology may be applied to other types of engines, for example, two-stroke engines.

[0047] will refer to Figures 1 to 7 Internal combustion engine 10 is described. The engine 10 has two cylinders 12 placed in-line. Likewise, the central axes 14 of the cylinders 12 are aligned and parallel to each other. The engine 10 has an engine casing 16 made of multiple components. The engine housing 16 includes a cylinder head cover 18 , a cylinder head 20 , a cylinder block 22 , a crankcase 24 , a magneto cover 26 and a clutch cover 28 . The cylinder head cover 18 , cylinder head 20 , cylinder block 22 , crankcase 24 , magneto cover 26 and clutch cover 28 are made of cast aluminum, although it is contemplated that different materials and fabrication methods could be used. The crankcase 24 is mad...

Abstract

An internal combustion engine has a crankcase having a first crankcase part fixed to a second crankcase part along a first plane, a crankshaft, a cylinder block defining two cylinders, two pistons, and a cylinder head. The crankshaft support defines a crankshaft support bore. The central portion of the crankshaft is accommodated in the crankshaft support hole. At least one fastener secures the crankshaft support to the cylinder block. The at least one fastener is perpendicular to the crankshaft axis and disposed in a second plane. The crankshaft axis is normal to the first plane. The second plane is one of coplanar and parallel to the first plane.

Description

[0001] cross reference [0002] This application claims priority to US Provisional Patent Application No. 61 / 758,853, filed January 31, 2013, the entire contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference. technical field [0003] The technology relates to internal combustion engines having a split crankcase. Background technique [0004] In many internal combustion engines, to facilitate manufacturing, the engine casing is made of a plurality of components fixed to each other. One of these components is the crankcase, which houses and supports, among other components, the crankshaft for rotation therein. [0005] One method of making crankcases is casting. To facilitate casting, crankcases are usually made of two or more parts fixed to each other. In a crankcase made of two parts, the crankcase may be divided along a plane containing the crankshaft axis, such as a horizontal plane, or along a plane perpendicular to the crankshaft axis. The latter offers some advantag...
