Problems solved by technology

Therefore, the ALS sensor does not provide the user with much information about the user's surroundings
Video cameras, on the other hand, capture light information to produce images, but use a lot of power
Therefore, having the camera running all the time to determine the user's environment is currently not practical

Embodiment Construction

[0013] The present invention provides a system and method for determining whether a user having a portable device with a spectrometer (e.g., a mobile computing device) is currently located in a given context. "Context" means the surrounding environment and environment of the user, including (but not limited to) time, location, social environment, speed, direction, or a combination thereof. For example, the method of the present invention can help determine whether the user is on the subway, in a crowd, and / or has lunch in a certain restaurant. The method extracts information about the surrounding environment by analyzing the collected ambient light. The term "ambient light" as used herein means the light in the user's surrounding environment, whether it is generated by natural or mechanical sources. Ambient light includes all wavelengths in the electromagnetic spectrum, including radio, microwave, infrared, visible light, and ultraviolet.

Abstract

A method of performing context inference is described. The method includes collecting ambient light at a spectrometer sensor integrated in a portable device, characterizing the collected light to obtain optical information, comparing the optical information to optical data predetermined to match one or more contexts, inferring at least one characteristic of a specific context based on the comparison, and determining a probability that the portable device is in the specific context.

Description

Technical field [0001] This application is related to a method of using a spectrometer, and more specifically, a method of using a spectrometer to determine a personal background environment. Background technique [0002] Users of smart phones and other mobile devices often want to know the background environment or surrounding conditions of smart phones and other mobile devices. For example, users may want to determine their location, determine whether the immediate environment contains natural or artificial light, or determine whether a particular device (e.g., TV, radio, or microwave) is nearby. In addition, smartphone applications can use background environment information to provide additional services or enhanced services to users. The smartphone operating system itself can use background environment information to better manage system resources. For example, if the environment around the device is relatively static, some operations can be delayed, thus saving precious ba...
