[0013] Light emitting diodes (LEDs) are used in lighting applications where conventional dimmers have been used. For example, users can replace conventional incandescent light bulbs with LED light bulbs. If the LED bulb is connected to a dimmer, the circuits and methods disclosed herein enable the dimmer to operate and dim the LED bulb without flickering and other problems. The circuits and methods disclosed herein achieve high power factor through power factor correction without dimming the LED light bulb. Power factor is not corrected when dimming LEDs.

Abstract

In the depicted example, the LED controller (100) includes: an input (114) connectable to a power source (110); and an output (140) connectable to at least one LED (102). A power factor correction circuit (130) is coupled between the input (114) and the output (140). The power factor correction circuit (130) operates in a first state when correcting a power factor. The power factor correction circuit (130) operates in a second state when the power factor is not corrected. The power factor correction circuit (130) is in the first state when no dimming of the LED (102) is sensed, and the power factor correction circuit (130) is in the first state when dimming of the LED (102) is sensed.
