A method and system allow a lighting device having light sources with multiple color temperatures to vary a color temperature of the lighting device in response to changing dimming levels. The light sources are non-incandescent light sources, such as light emitting diodes and/or gas-discharge lights. A dimmer circuit provides a dimming signal that indicates a selected dimming level. The lighting device includes a light source driver and a light source driver controller that cooperate to vary drive currents to the light sources in response to the selected dimming level. By varying the drive currents in different relative amounts, the color temperature of the lighting device changes in response to dimming level changes. In at least one embodiment, changes in the color temperature of the lighting device in response to the dimming level changes simulates the color temperature changes of an incandescent light source.

A light source (10) comprises a light engine (16), a base (24), a power conversion circuit (30) and an enclosure (22). The light engine (16) comprises at least one LED (12) disposed on a platform (14). The platform (14) is adapted to directly mate with the base (24) which a standard incandescent bulb light base. Phosphor (44) receives the light generated by the at least one LED (12) and converts it to visible light. The enclosure (22) has a shape of a standard incandescent lamp.

An LED lighting device comprises: a thermally conducting body having an at least one opening that connects with a cavity within the body and a plurality of LEDs mounted in thermal communication with a face of the body and positioned around the opening. One or more passages pass through the body from the cavity to an outer surface of the body and are configured such that in operation air moves through the cavity by thermal convection thereby to provide cooling of the body. Each passage is configured in a direction that extends in a direction at an angle of about 45° to a line that is parallel with the axis of the body toward the outer surface of the body away from the face. The body can be configured such that its outer surface has a form factor resembling an incandescent light bulb or halogen reflector lamp.

The invention comprises use of Dynamically Switchable Bypass (DSB) elements in association with one or more Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) in arrays for illumination circuits to provide rugged, reliable lighting. The DSBs are selected from Transient Voltage Suppressors, including Silicon, Metal Oxide Varistors, and Multi Layer Varistors as well as Zener Diodes. The DSBs are not used as circuit protecting devices, but rather as alternative paths for electric current to bypass failed LEDs. Bi-directional TVSs are used as alternative electric paths for circuits using Alternating Current (AC) and parallel LED arrays that light on both phases of AC. Zener Diodes are used in parallel to, but in the opposite polarity orientation to, one or more LEDs in DC or rectified AC circuits. The inventive paired DSB/LED elements overcomes the black-out problems of prior series LED illumination systems, making possible the use of robust LEDs in illumination systems where reliability, long life, low power consumption, low heat output, resistance to shock, vibration, and humidity, and self-diagnosis are important. The DSB elements have breakdown voltages slightly higher than the LED(s) they support, so that when an LED fails, the conduction through the DSB begins. Because the conduction voltage of the DSB so nearly matches the conduction voltage of the LED(s), the remainder of the circuit continues to function as normal. The system is self-diagnostic in that any LED failure presents itself as a dark LED rather than as a whole string of dark LEDs. DSBs may be used with incandescent bulbs.

An LED lamp is provided in which the output light intensity of the LEDs in the LED lamp is adjusted based on the input voltage to the LED lamp. A dimmer control unit detects a type of dimmer switch during a configuration process. Using the detected dimmer type, the dimmer control unit generates control signals appropriate for the detected dimmer type to provide regulated current to the LEDs and to achieve the desired dimming effect. The LED lamp can be a direct replacement of conventional incandescent lamps in typical wiring configurations found in residential and commercial building lighting applications that use conventional dimmer switches.

A light emitting diode (LED) light bulb configured to replicate the light output of a conventional incandescent light bulb is provided. The LED light bulb includes a base for coupling the bulb to a power source having at least one side wall defining a cavity; a generally rectangular substrate having a first end and a second end, the second end disposed in the cavity and electrically coupled to the base; a plurality of LEDs electrically coupled and disposed on the first end of the substrate, the plurality of LEDS arranged on a front face, back face and top edge of the first end of the substrate to emit light in a spherical output; and a light transmissive cover configured to enclose the plurality of LEDs, the cover being coupled to the base.

An LED lamp is provided in which the output light intensity of the LEDs in the LED lamp is adjusted based on the input voltage to the LED lamp. The LED lamp comprises one or more LEDs, and an LED driver configured to receive an input voltage and provide regulated current to said one or more LEDs, where the LED driver is configured to adjust the regulated current to said one or more LEDs according to the input voltage to adjust the output light intensity of said one or more LEDs. The invention discloses a high efficiency incandescent and Compact Fluorescent (CFL) bulb replacement LED lamp having a good color reproduction. The LED light bulb includes two groups of semiconductor light emitters and a luminescent material to emit four different spectrums of light. The two groups of semiconductor light emitters are enclosed around an interior wall of the light bulb housing, which has a plurality of fins at an exterior surface for effective heat dissipation. A high reflective member having a dome shape in the center is disposed under the two groups of semiconductor light emitters to redirect the emission and excitation lights from the two groups of semiconductor light emitters and recycle the backscattered light for multi-spectrum light mixing. The LED-light bulb further includes a single power line connecting to the two groups of semiconductor light emitters and a high efficiency electrical AC/DC conversion and control device. The light bulb has a diffuser dome for an output window and a conventional Edison-mount screw-type light bulb socket, a conventional fluorescent tube coupler arrangement or a conventional halogen MR-16 socket arrangement connecting to an AC power base. If a voltage is supplied to the AC/DC conversion and control device, a mixture light from the diffuser dome produces a warm white light with a color rendering index of at least 85 and a luminous efficacy of at least 80 lumens per watt.

Disclosed is a method and apparatus for providing a light emitting diode and driving circuitry integrated into a component module that will retrofit common incandescent lightbulb applications. The disclosed embodiments will perform with high efficiency at a wide operating voltage range with a very small size allowing for the incorporation within the envelope and form of existing lightbulb bases. Therefore, a single universal LED light bulb module can be used to replace the dozens of conventional LED and incandescent lights currently being used. Disclosed is a LED lighting apparatus with one or more swivel connections. The LED lighting apparatus includes a housing with at least one end, at least one light emitting diode extending along the housing and at least one end cap. The end cap has an opening with a sidewall to cap the end of the housing and a surface opposite the opening and spanning the sidewall. At least two pin connectors extend from the surface and are connectable to a standard fluorescent or incandescent light fixture. Various configurations are described such that the housing will rotate within the end caps with application of a rotational force after connection of the pin connectors to the light fixture to adjust the light output direction of the LED lighting apparatus.

There is provided a highly reliable semiconductor light emitting device in which disconnection of wires does not occur in case that a semiconductor light emitting device capable of being used in place of incandescent lamps or fluorescent lamps is formed in a monolithic type by forming a plurality of light emitting units on one substrate. A plurality of light emitting units (1) are formed by electrically separating a semiconductor lamination portion (17) which is so formed on a substrate (11) as to form a light emitting layer, and the light emitting units (1) are respectively connected in series and/or parallel by wiring films (3). For obtaining the light emitting units (1) from the semiconductor lamination portion a separation groove (17a) and an insulation film (21) deposited in the separation groove (17a) are formed in the semiconductor lamination portion (17). An optical element is disclosed, for receiving relatively narrow light from a planar light-emitting diode (LED) source, and for redistributing the light into a relatively wide range of output angles that span a full 360 degrees. The element may be used to retrofit existing fixtures that were originally designed for incandescent bulbs with LED-based light sources that have similar emission profiles. The element is small enough so that it may be packaged along with an LED module and its control electronics in the volume envelope of an incandescent light bulb. An exemplary element is a single, transparent, rotationally-symmetric lens that has a batwing shape in cross-section, extending angularly away from a longitudinal axis. The lens also includes a variety of curved, straight, specular and optionally diffuse portions on its longitudinal and transverse faces, all of which cause a variety of internal and external reflections, refractions, and optionally scattering. As such, many of the specific lens features cannot be directly linked to specific optical effects at a particular angle; rather, the features all interact with each other to produce the wide-angle light output.

An LED lamp module designed to be easily retrofitted into existing incandescent based light fixtures with minimum modification is provided. The LED lamp module includes a generally circular metal core board including a first surface and a second surface; at least one LED disposed centrally on the first surface of the metal core board; and a flat annular printed circuit board including a current driver circuit for powering the at least one LED, the annular printed circuit board being disposed around the at least one LED and electrically coupled to the at least one LED, wherein the second surface of the metal core board is configured to contact a host fixture and heat generated by the at least one LED is conducted to the host fixture. The LED lamp module uses the host light fixture as a heat sink to transfer and dissipate heat to the external environment.

A solid state lighting subassembly or fixture includes an anisotropic heat spreading material. A heat spreading layer may be placed between a light emitting diode (LED) and luminaire or reflector and serves to spread heat laterally away from the LED. Low profile, low weight heat spreading may be utilized both to retrofit existing light fixtures with. LEDs or to replace existing incandescent and fluorescent fixtures with LED based fixtures.

An LED lighting device for use in and powered through an incandescent light bulb alternating current socket is provided. The lighting device includes an LED light, a regulation circuit and a base. The regulation circuit converts an alternating current input to a direct current output. The base is adapted to fit within an incandescent light bulb alternating current socket. In addition to the LED light, regulation circuit and base, the invention can further include a heat sink that removes heat from the LED light, regulation circuit and combinations thereof. Preferably the heat sink is a ceramic. In addition, the regulation circuit can be a printed circuit that is printed directly onto the ceramic heat sink. The LED light, regulation circuit, base, and ceramic heat sink take the form of a lighting device that is exchangeable with an incandescent light bulb in traditional lighting fixtures.

A rechargeable battery power source mounted on the lighting device is connectable to apparatus for charging the battery without removing the battery from the device. The apparatus includes an elongated probe assembly releasably connectable to the lighting device to perform the recharging process. The lighting device is particularly adapted for ease of placement of a light source for decorative purposes and/or illuminating artifacts in locations which would require substantial structural modifications to install conventional lighting.
