A general sensor (100) comprising at least one sensor (130), a short range communications interface (150), a long range communications interface (140) and a controller (110), wherein said controller (110) is configured for: detecting a first access point (AP1) through said short range communications interface (150); receiving operating instructions (Oi) for said at least one sensor (130) from said first access point (API); causing said at least one sensor (130) to operate according to said operating instructions (Oi); receiving sensor data from said at least one sensor (130); and for reporting said sensor data through said long range communications interface (140).
