[0021] The following description is provided with reference to the drawings, wherein like reference numerals are used to refer to like elements throughout. While various details of one or more techniques are described herein, other techniques are also possible. In some instances, structures and devices are shown in block diagram form in order to facilitate describing various techniques.

[0022] Embodiments of the invention relate to providing refocusable images. A refocusable image is an image that can be refocused or adjusted to have a different focal length after being captured. Embodiments described herein can utilize mobile user devices such as smartphones without requiring dedicated hardware. The camera of a mobile device may be configured to continuously acquire a series of images (eg, a static scene) over a short period of time, with the focal length of the camera being varied such that each image has a different focal length. An image stack is created by aligning the...

Abstract

Embodiments of the invention relate to providing refocusable images. A refocusable image is an image that can be refocused or adjusted to have a different focal length after being captured. The embodiments described herein can utilize mobile user devices such as smartphones without the need for dedicated hardware. The camera of the mobile device may be configured to continuously acquire a series of images over a short period of time, wherein the focal length of the camera is changed such that each image has a different focal length. An image stack is created by aligning the images, and the images are processed to determine for each region in the image stack which image has the highest contrast (ie, is in focus). Embodiments may further comprise displaying a first image of the series of images.

Description

Background technique [0001] Refocusable images, or "live pictures," are becoming popular due to the latest consumer products utilizing specialized technology. These techniques use dedicated hardware to generate images that can be refocused after they have been captured by, for example, selecting different parts of the image. The selected portion can become in focus. This gives the viewer a more interactive image viewing experience. However, dedicated hardware to implement this functionality can be expensive. Contents of the invention [0002] Embodiments of the invention relate to providing refocusable images via mobile user devices such as smartphones, without the need for such hardware. A camera of a mobile device may be configured to continuously acquire a series of images over a certain period of time. During the time period, the focal length of the camera is changed regardless of what is being captured such that each image in the series of images is captured using a...
