Embodiment Construction

[0043] First refer to figure 1 , describing a multi-needle TIPS device and a method of using the multi-needle TIPS device according to the present invention. The devices and methods described herein are ideal for quickly locating the correct portal vein for establishing the shunt 103 connecting the right hepatic vein 101 to the right portal vein 102 through the human liver 100 .

[0044] Now refer to figure 2 , 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7, the device 200 and its basic components are described separately and in contracted and extended states. figure 2 Device 200 is shown in a retracted state, which is the default state of disengagement. The outer sheath 201 is the basic external component of the device 200 . The outer sheath has an inner dilator to allow access to the right hepatic vein through a guidewire. The outer sheath 201 is a ten (10) French (for reference, 1 French = 3mm) sheath made of a semi-rigid material. exist Figure 4 In the embodiment, the outer sheath 201 has a sh...

Abstract

A device method for establishing a venous intrahepatic portosystemic shunt from the hepatic vein to the portal vein. The device comprises, an elongated hollow outer guide; an outer handle having a lumen and a first luer lock, the outer handle is attached to the proximal end of the outer guide, the outer guide is connected to the lumen and the second luer lock. a luer lock in fluid communication; an elongated hollow inner needle; and a hub having a second luer lock attached to the proximal end of the inner needle, the inner needle being attached to the second luer Al connector locks fluid communication. The inner needle is slidably received within the outer guide through the lumen. The inner needle is rotated within the outer guide by operation of the hub; and the distal tip of the inner needle is deployed beyond and beyond the distal tip of the outer guide.

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application is a continuation-in-part of co-pending U.S. Patent Application Ser. is a continuation-in-part of U.S. Patent No. 8,287,481) which claims priority to expired U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 61 / 140,693, filed December 24, 2008. technical field [0003] The present application relates to a device and method for rapidly locating the hepatic portal vein to establish a trans-liver shunt between the portal vein and the hepatic vein, and in particular to a transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt ("TIPS") device and a method for establishing a TIPS using the device. Background technique [0004] The human liver performs a variety of functions essential to life, including breaking down fat, metabolizing / storing glucose, producing urea, synthesizing amino acids, filtering toxins, storing vitamins and minerals, and metabolizing cholesterol. Typically, a healthy liver receives approximately 70-75% ...
