Abstract

Friction welded assemblies and spin welding methods are provided wherein the members to be joined are polymeric members. The design provided for polymer components allows the use of relatively low velocities and pressures to achieve excellent friction welded joints between the components. Furthermore, high surface area polymer components can be successfully friction welded with this design. In some variations, at least one polymeric member has a welding surface with surface features that are concave (eg, grooves) or convex. In other variations, the first member in the weld region has a different non-complementary shape than the second member, thus creating a progressively advancing weld line that avoids high temperatures that could cause damage to the polymeric member and weld joint. This component design also provides improved flash management at weld joints.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to improved tool component assemblies and methods for friction welding (such as spin welding, for example) of polymer components. Background technique [0002] This section provides background information related to the present disclosure that is not necessarily prior art. [0003] Friction welding techniques, including spin welding, can be used to join various materials. For example, molded polymeric or plastic components may be joined or assembled via a spin welding process in which heat is generated via mechanical friction between moving and stationary components. The area of heated material near the friction zone softens and can displace; thus, a melted area with material from both the moving and stationary components is created. However, there are limitations to conventional spin welding of polymer or plastic parts. For example, the formation of friction welded part assemblies by spin welding is generally limite...
