Embodiment Construction

[0018] A number of considerations are taken into account in the present disclosure when synthesizing homogenous regions, which may be performed, for example, during a repair process. In an inpainting process that takes into account neighboring structures, once structures are reconstructed in a missing image region, the missing region is divided into one or more missing regions surrounded by homogeneous regions. These areas need to be composited to complete the restoration process. In one conventional approach to patch filling, patches are filled around the borders to make missing regions smaller and processing continues until the entire missing region is filled. Variations in color or brightness in boundary regions used to repair homogeneous regions can lead to discontinuities, false edges and visual artifacts in composited regions.

[0019] This change may be due to a change in brightness or color from one side of the removed object to the other, caused by shadows, lighting ...

Abstract

The use of frequency decomposition for better color consistency in compositing regions is disclosed. Methods and apparatus are presented for synthesizing homogeneous regions when filling in missing regions, such as for inpainting objects removed (or moved) from an image. A color interpolation process is performed across the relative boundaries of the missing regions to guide the color selection in the patch matching process. Patch matching is performed based on using a detail layer modified by information from color interpolation for each target patch filled from the end of the missing region towards its center.
