Embodiment Construction

[0058] Described herein is an example tool and method for bone fixation to restore and hold bone fragments together, which may be used as a temporary solution prior to more permanent fixation of the bone fragments. For example, the present invention may provide a bone nail gun that may be used to deliver bone nails into bone fragments to secure the bone fragments together. The nails can remain in the patient for a period of time, or the nails can absorb into the patient.

[0059] figure 1 A perspective view of a bone nail gun 10 is illustrated, according to at least one example. The bone nail gun 10 can be used to stabilize bone fragments, for example, by delivering bone nails into the bone fragments. The bone nail gun 10 can extend from a proximal end 12 to a distal end 14 . The bone nail gun 10 may include a body portion 31 having a barrel portion 24 and a handle 16 , a magazine holder 26 , a collar portion 22 , and a trigger assembly 13 including a trigger 18 . figure 1...

Abstract

An orthopedic tool (10) for bone fixation is provided for driving bone screws into bone fragments to stabilize the bone fragments by maintaining them in a reduced state. The tool, which may be a hand-held device, includes a magazine (56) having a plurality of channels (98) containing one or more bone pegs (62) positioned within the channels. The tool may further include a pneumatic piston (64) having a protrusion (70) dimensioned to be received within the plurality of channels, the protrusion applying sufficient force to the bone screw to drive the bone screw. The cartridge is ejected and driven into the bone fragment.

Description

[0001] priority claim [0002] This application claims the benefit of, and claims priority to, U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 61 / 974,554, filed April 3, 2014, and U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 62 / 005,006, filed May 30, 2014 , both of which are incorporated herein by reference in their entirety. technical field [0003] The present disclosure relates to orthopedic tools for bone fixation, and more particularly to orthopedic tools and methods for driving bone screws into bone fragments to stabilize the bone fragments. Background technique [0004] In trauma cases involving bone fragmentation, such as periarticular and comminuted (multisegmental) fractures, bone fragmentation may produce many bone fragments. During surgery, the bone fragments may be brought back and temporarily fastened together before being more permanently fixed together. Tight reassembly of bone fragments is important for proper healing. Traditionally, temporary fixation can be achieved...
