AI Technical Summary

Problems solved by technology

Such low temperature rated sensors and valves are often expensive and sometimes cannot detect and react to all failure modes in time to prevent downstream problems
These types of methods are expensive and may not guarantee proper detection of unsafe conditions
Few, if any, cryogenically rated sensors or valves are cost-appropriate for the on-road LNG market

Embodiment Construction

[0020] This document describes systems and techniques for controlling the flow of cryogenic fluids, such as liquid natural gas (LNG), based on predetermined temperatures. Generally, a spring loaded check valve is placed in the fluid flow path. At least one spring or other biasing member made of a temperature sensitive shape memory alloy keeps the valve open when the fluid is above a predetermined temperature and keeps the valve closed when the fluid falls below a predetermined temperature. For example, a valve may allow LNG to flow at gaseous temperatures, but prevent LNG from flowing at liquid temperatures.

[0021] figure 1 is a schematic diagram showing an example of a cryogenic fluid delivery system 100 with a cryogenic fluid valve 110 . System 100 includes liquid cryogenic fluid tank 120 . Tank 120 contains pressurized cryogenic fluid, which exists partly as cryogenic liquid 122 and partly as cryogenic gas 124 . In certain embodiments, the cryogenic fluid may be natur...

Abstract

The subject matter of this specification can be embodied in, among other things, a check valve that includes a valve body having a bore and a seat along the bore, a fluid inlet at a first end of the bore, and a fluid outlet a second end of the bore, a stopper selectively movable along the bore to contact the seat, the bore being occluded when the stopper is in contact with the seat, a first bias member on a first side of the stopper within the bore, the first bias member providing a first bias force upon the stopper in a first direction, and a second bias member on a second side of the stopper within the bore, the second side being opposite the first side, the second bias member providing a second bias force upon the stopper in a second direction opposite the first direction.

Description

[0001] priority statement [0002] This application claims priority to US Patent Application Serial No. 14 / 248,104, filed April 8, 2014, which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. technical field [0003] The present invention relates to fluid check valves. Background technique [0004] Certain vehicles, such as buses and natural gas delivery trucks, use liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a form of fuel storage for use on the vehicle. The LNG is vaporized and heated before traveling to the fuel system on the engine. The LNG tank system includes a heat exchanger to vaporize cryogenic LNG from a liquid state to a gaseous state. In the event of loss of engine coolant supply or catastrophic failure of a heat exchanger, cryogenic fuel can flow to the fuel system and through many components not necessarily cold tolerant, leading to possible LNG leaks and fire risks. [0005] Some existing methods for stopping the flow of liquid LNG rely on temperature sensors to det...
