Problems solved by technology

As a result, existing systems have proven to be extremely inefficient at stick-slip detection, since stick-slip detection cannot be achieved very quickly or reliably if the data is analyzed off-line and if the characteristics of the stick-slip are similar to other system errors
This not only caused improper timing of stick-slip detection, but also misdiagnosis of stick-slip detection

Embodiment Construction

[0014] In the following specification and claims, reference will be made to various terms which will be defined to have the following meanings.

[0015] The singular forms "a" and "the" include plural referents unless the context clearly dictates otherwise.

[0016] "Optional" or "optionally" means that the subsequently described event or circumstance can or cannot occur, and that the description includes instances where the event occurs and instances where it does not.

[0017] Approximate language, as used herein throughout the specification and claims, may be applied to modify any quantitative representation that may be varied without causing a change in the basic function to which it relates. Accordingly, a value modified by a term or terms such as "about," "approximately," and "substantially" is not to be limited to the precise value specified. In at least some instances, the approximate language may correspond to the precision of an instrument used to measure the value....

Abstract

A method of performing online diagnostics for a valve includes receiving valve information while the valve is in operation. The valve information includes setpoint data and position data associated with the valve. The method further includes processing the setpoint data and the position data at a plurality of time intervals, and detecting an occurrence of a stick-slip based on the processing.

Description

technical field [0001] The field of the disclosure relates generally to stick-slip detection, and more particularly to systems and methods for detecting the occurrence of stick-slip by performing online diagnostics on a valve. Background technique [0002] Stick-slip in control valves refers to the inability to control the valve position due to high static and low dynamic friction between the valve stem and valve packing. Stick-slip occurs when trying to move the position of the valve to the set point. However, when force is applied to move the valve, the force does not immediately overcome static friction. Therefore, the force is increased until the static friction is overcome, which causes the kick due to low dynamic friction. Unfortunately, the force required to overcome the stiction forces the valve past the desired set point, and thus the valve becomes stuck in the new, undesired position. This process repeats in the opposite direction, causing the valve to cycle bac...
