Problems solved by technology

However, an increase in the transmitted power of one channel also changes the nonlinearity-induced distortion of the other channels
Therefore, it is difficult to adjust the power levels of all subchannels in the same fiber to meet BER requirements

[0021] Figure 1A A block diagram of a superchannel transmitter for transmitting data to a receiver over an optical superchannel formed by a set of subchannels of different wavelengths is shown. Figure 1B shows that the Figure 1A A flowchart of a method for transmitting data implemented by a superchannel transmitter of .

[0022] Some embodiments of the present invention are based on the recognition that data transmitted over super-channels may be unequally split into a set of data streams for transmission over sub-channels. Typically, the bit rate and size of data transmitted over the entire superchannel is fixed. However, depending on the implementation, only the bit rate for the subchannels is fixed, while the size of the transmitted data stream can vary for different subchannels as long as the sum of the data transmitted over all subchannels is equal to the fixed bit rate transmitted over the superchannel. data.

Abstract

A method for transmitting data over an optical super-channel partitions the data unequally into a set of data streams for transmission over the set of sub-channels of the super-channel, such that a size of a first data stream for transmission over a first sub-channel is different than a size of a second data stream of the data for transmission over a second sub-channel. The method encodes each data stream of the data with an error correction code (ECC) having different ECC rates to produce a set of encoded data streams and transmits concurrently the set of encoded data streams over the set of sub-channels of the super-channel. Accordingly, the method uses an adaptive ECC for optical super-channels, such that a first ECC rate for encoding the first data stream is different than a second ECC rate for encoding the second data stream.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to coherent optical communication systems, and more particularly to the transmission of data over optical superchannels. Background technique [0002] Coherent optical communication enables data to be transmitted at high data rates over long-distance (typically >2,000km) optical transport networks. Coherent detectors require that the received phase-modulated optical signal be digitized for use in a digital signal processor (DSP). Digitizing the received signal requires a high-speed digital-to-analog converter (ADC). However, for single-wavelength coherent detection at data rates greater than 100 Gbit / s, it is difficult to achieve an increase in serial ADC sampling rate. [0003] Superchannels are an evolution of Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM), where multiple coherent optical carriers are combined on a single superchannel at higher data rates and brought into use during a single cycle of operat...
