Abstract

The present invention provides a joint design to connect tubes for a space frame, wherein a space frame may be a vehicle chassis. The joint may connect carbon fiber tubes and may be designed with different shapes and configurations. The joint may include acceptor ports that may mate with a tube and simultaneously contact an inner surface and outer surface of the tube for a strong connection. The joint may also include centering features which may create a space between a surface of the tube and a surface of the joint through which adhesive may flow.

Background technique [0003] Tube frame chassis construction is widely used in low volume and high performance vehicle designs, which has the advantages of low tooling costs, design flexibility, and the ability to produce efficient structures. Existing manufacturing methods for tube frame chassis require extensive labor to cut and score all the tubes to the correct length, and require skilled welders to bond each tube connection joint. Using carbon fiber as material for the tubes in the chassis frame reduces labor and tooling costs for construction.
