Embodiment Construction

[0017] The following description refers to systems for mixers. The mixer may be a static mixer located in the intake passage and / or the exhaust passage. A mixer located in the intake passage may be configured to receive EGR and ambient air in a chamber where the EGR and ambient air may mix before flowing to one or more cylinders of the engine. The mixers located in the exhaust passages may be substantially similar to the mixers in the intake passages. A mixer in the exhaust passage may be configured to receive exhaust gas, wherein the injector is positioned to inject urea into a chamber of the mixer. In this way, the mixer in the intake passage may be an EGR mixer, and the mixer in the exhaust passage may be a urea mixer. In one example, the difference between the EGR mixer and the urea mixer includes the EGR mixer being fluidly coupled to the EGR passage, and the urea mixer being fluidly coupled to the urea injector. The differences and similarities between the mixers are ...

Abstract

The invention relates to a mixer for mixing exhaust gas. Systems are provided for a mixer configured to be used in either an intake or exhaust passage. In one example, a mixer in the intake passage may be adapted to mix EGR with intake air and a mixer in the exhaust passage may be adapted to mix urea with exhaust gas.

Description

technical field [0001] The present specification generally relates to a mixer for mixing one or more of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and urea. Background technique [0002] To meet stringent federal government emissions standards, engine systems may be configured with a variety of technologies for reducing emissions. In particular, it may be desirable to address nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. Two example technologies for reducing NOx may include exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) devices. NOx reduction via EGR includes recirculating a controlled proportion of engine exhaust gas back into the intake passage for combination with intake air. The addition of EGR may not chemically participate in combustion (eg, the gas is substantially inert) and may reduce the amount of cylinder contents available for combustion. This can result in correspondingly lower peak cylinder temperatures and heat release. By doing so, NOx emissions can be re...
