[0019] The following description pertains to measurements being stored in such figure 1 Systems and methods for amounting particulate matter on an engine exhaust particulate filter in a vehicle system. A cylindrical particulate matter (PM) sensor configured with positive and negative electrodes distributed over different surfaces of different sensor elements and further separated by a gap( figure 2 ). A negative electrode can be formed on the outer, inner surface of the non-perforated tube of the PM sensor, while a positive electrode can be formed on the outer surface of the perforated region of the guide tube of the PM sensor. Accordingly, the electrodes are formed on separate cylindrical surfaces and are further separated by the gap. The guide tube may further include a smaller non-perforated region coupled to the perforated region, both of which are coaxially disposed within the outer tube. exist Figures 3A-3C A cross-sectional view of the outer tube, the perforated ...

Abstract

The present invention relates to methods and systems for exhaust particulate matter sensing. Methods and systems are provided for a particulate matter sensor disposed downstream of a diesel particulate filter in an exhaust system. In one example, a particulate matter sensor may include an outer, non-perforated tube including a plurality of negative electrodes formed along an inner surface, and a guide tube including a perforated central element and an inner tube, the central element includes a plurality of positive electrodes formed along the outer surface. By forming the electrodes on different cylindrical surfaces and separating the electrodes by a gap, a more uniform electric field can be generated in the gap between the electrodes, thereby improving soot capture and increasing particulate matter sensor sensitivity.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to the design and use of resistive particulate matter (PM) sensors in exhaust gas streams. Background technique [0002] Diesel combustion can produce emissions, including particulate matter (PM). Particulate matter may include diesel soot and aerosols such as ash particles, metal corrosion particles, sulfates and silicates. When released into the atmosphere, PM can be in the form of individual particles or chain aggregates, most of which are in the invisible submicron range of 100 nanometers. Various techniques have been developed to identify and filter out exhaust PM before it is released into the atmosphere. [0003] As an example, PM or soot sensors may be used in vehicles with internal combustion engines. A PM sensor may be located upstream and / or downstream of a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and may be used to sense PM load on the filter and diagnose DPF operation. Resistive PM sensors typically inclu...
