Embodiment Construction

[0016] The following generally relates to limiting performance variation in storage devices. In one embodiment, storage devices are often required to provide consistent performance. For example, large data centers want to be able to tell customers that they can store / deliver data within a specific and narrow time frame. Therefore, storage device designers examine response time variations and generally attempt to eliminate response time outliers.

[0017] Furthermore, users of storage devices also expect that their storage devices will not introduce any errors into the stored data. Storage devices can introduce errors into data in various ways. For example, a solid-state drive (SSD) using multi-level cell (MLC) technology may introduce read or write errors into data by incorrectly interpreting charge levels. MLC SSDs are designed to store two bits of data in a single cell. Therefore, each cell of an MLC SSD is able to assume four states, which represent different amounts of...

Abstract

The subject application relates to techniques for limiting performance variation in storage devices. The present invention describes a system and method for limiting performance variation in a storage device. A storage device receives one or more work requests from other computing devices, such as a host computing device, to perform one or more operations. Response times may be required to complete said work requests. In some implementations, the storage device may allocate additional computing resources to complete the work request if the response time to execute the work request exceeds a threshold.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to storage devices. Background technique [0002] Storage devices can introduce errors into data in various ways. For example, a solid-state drive (SSD) using multi-level cell (MLC) technology may introduce read or write errors into data by incorrectly interpreting charge levels. To overcome errors, typical storage device systems may employ various error recovery methods, which may introduce, for example, variations in the response time of the storage device system. Contents of the invention [0003] The present disclosure relates to methods and systems for limiting performance variation in storage devices. In some embodiments, the systems and methods of the present invention may allocate additional resources to perform work requests received by storage devices. [0004] The present invention describes a storage device including a system for limiting performance variation in the storage device. In one embodiment, a ...
