Embodiment Construction

[0025] Various embodiments relate to reducing the frequent idle-to-active transitions that can occur in mobile devices, and in particular to reducing the frequency of content and presence update messages and keep-alive messages generated by mobile data applications.

[0026] In various embodiments, messages may be carried by operators managing the radio access network and core network to provide data to and from mobile devices. Some embodiments of the communication system may be implemented with radio technologies such as: Institute of Electronics and Electrical Engineers (IEEE) 802.16 (WiMAX), IEEE 802-20, 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Evolved Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) ) Terrestrial Radio Access (UTRA) (E-UTRA), etc. IEEE802.16m is an evolution of IEEE802.16e, and provides backward compatibility with IEEE 802.16-based systems. UTRA is part of UMTS. 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) is a part of Evolved UMTS (E-UMTS) using E-UTRA. LTE Advanc...

Abstract

An apparatus may include a radio frequency (RF) transceiver and a message aggregation module arranged to intercept a plurality of messages from one or more mobile data applications during an idle mode of a device, one or more of the plurality of messages Operable to trigger a transition of the device from idle mode to connected mode by causing a radio resource control message to be sent from the device to the radio access network, the message aggregation module stores a plurality of messages in a buffer associated with one or more mobile data applications to maintain the device in the idle mode and schedule the stored messages for transmission through the RF transceiver at defined instances of time based on the delay tolerance of the one or more mobile data applications while the device is in the connected mode. Other embodiments are disclosed and claimed.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims the benefit of priority to US Provisional Patent Application No. 61 / 450,070, filed March 7, 2011 and incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. technical field [0003] Embodiments of the present disclosure generally relate to techniques for managing idle state activity in mobile devices. Background technique [0004] Today, mobile communication devices are filled with mobile data applications, including so-called "always-on" applications that can send periodic messages to keep application sessions "alive" between different devices that can be remotely connected to each other. Additionally, other applications may periodically generate status update messages that provide messaging between remotely coupled devices. These types of messages can even be generated when the mobile communication device is otherwise inactive, resulting in frequent transitions between idle and active states, which...
