A welding power system comprising a controller (600) having (a) data input means via which an operator can input parameters associated with the volume of the interior of one or more components to be welded, and (b) calculating and outputting a purge time, which is the period of time required to displace the atmosphere within the volume with the purge gas at the predetermined flow rate of the purge gas.

Background technique [0001] The present disclosure generally relates to a welding power system, one type of which is a welding power supply. More specifically, the present disclosure relates to welding power systems for use in situations where purge gas is utilized, such as in welding corrosion-resistant metal vessels, typically fittings and pipes. [0002] During welding of steel, if oxygen reaches the weld zone, oxidation occurs in the weld. This is especially the case for stainless steel, titanium, zirconium, molybdenum, and other gas-reactive metals and alloys. The resulting oxidized surface is no longer corrosion resistant and requires further treatment. [0003] In order to avoid costly and not necessarily satisfactory subsequent processing affecting the weld, the atmosphere surrounding the weld is purged of oxygen.
