Abstract

The invention provides techniques for provisioning bootstrap electronic subscriber identity modules (eSIMs) to mobile devices. Representative embodiments described herein set forth techniques for provisioning bootstrap electronic subscriber identity modules (eSIMs) to mobile devices. According to some embodiments, a mobile device can be configured to issue, to an eSIM selection server, a bootstrapeSIM request that includes (i) metadata associated with the mobile device, and (ii) metadata associated with an electronic universal integrated circuit card (eUICC) included in the mobile device. Inturn, the eSIM selection server selects and binds a particular bootstrap eSIM to the mobile device, and provides the mobile device with information that enables the mobile device to obtain the particular bootstrap eSIM from one or more eSIM servers. When the mobile device obtains the particular bootstrap eSIM, the mobile device can interface with a mobile network operator (MNO) and obtain a complete eSIM that enables the mobile device to access services provided by the MNO.

Description

technical field [0001] The embodiments set forth techniques for provisioning a bootstrapped electronic subscriber identity module (eSIM) to a mobile device. Background technique [0002] Many mobile devices are configured to utilize a Universal Integrated Circuit Card (UICC) that enables the mobile device to access services offered by a Mobile Network Operator (MNO). Specifically, each UICC includes at least a microprocessor and a read-only memory (ROM), where the ROM is configured to store an MNO profile—also referred to herein as a Subscriber Identity Module (SIM)—that the mobile device can use to MNO configuration files to register with and interact with MNOs. Typically, the UICC takes the form of a small removable card (commonly referred to as a SIM card) configured to be inserted into a UICC receiving area included in a mobile device. However, in recent implementations, the UICC is embedded directly into the system board of the mobile device. These electronic / embedde...
